Track 1: Critical Infrastucture Planning and Protection (CI)

Session CI-5: Simulations for Emergency Planning

March 24, 2010

3:15 PM - 4:30 PM

Prerequisite: None

Evacuation planning should be a component of any comprehensive security plan. Because security measures may significantly impact location and movement of attendees, evaluating evacuation scenarios from various environments (buildings, sites, areas, access routes, cultural features, etc.) is necessary to examine potential hindrances to flow and assess building features that affect expedited evacuation. Using simulations provides an inclusive view of these possibilities, enabling the creation of the safest and most effective evacuation plan. Hear from actual government users and see a demonstration of the Evacuation Planning Tool used by the Secret Service.

Learning Objectives:

  • How well recently developed simulation methods can depict likely effects of a disaster and the way it is handled
  • How to use simulations in emergency planning, training, and preparation
  • Practical guidance that has emerged from simulation-based exercises preparing for recent actual events
