Coast Guard Honor Guard to Open the Ceremonies |
 |
We are pleased to announce the Coast Guard Honor Guard—created in 1962 by order of President John F. Kennedy to represent the United States Coast Guard through ceremonial operations held before world leaders and dignitaries—will be presenting the colors at the opening of Wednesday’s Keynote Address by Admiral Thad Allen, USCG (Retired), National Incident Commander, Deepwater Horizon oil spill. |

Admiral Thad Allen, USCG (Retired), National Incident Commander, Deepwater Horizon oil spill
When there is a crisis, the nation turns to Admiral Thad Allen. Throughout the course of his 40-year career with the Coast Guard, Allen’s no-nonsense leadership style and competency won him the respect of government leaders who saw him as a man who confronted challenges by capturing and focusing the passion, energy and efforts of diverse stakeholder groups toward achieving common goals.
Most recently at the center of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill when he was appointed by President Obama to lead the country’s efforts to end and clean up the spill, Allen believes that leadership starts with bringing people together, agreeing on goals and creating a unity of effort to solve intractable crises. As we live in times where the extraordinary is becoming more ordinary, Allen helps audiences understand that importance of preparation, preventative readiness and ensuring that you can manage a crisis before a crisis manages you and your business.

Most American’s know that U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s top priority is to prevent terrorists and terrorist weapons from entering the United States, but most people have no idea what it takes, day by day and shift by shift, to actually apprehend individuals attempting to enter the United States illegally or stem the flow of illegal drugs, and other contraband, from breaching the homeland… until now.
Thanks to a ground breaking new TV series on the National Geographic Channel, for the first time, viewers are taken directly onto the front lines of the Border Wars, to experience the action, drama, technology and complexities of this volatile and historic situation. In several of America's border hotspots, award winning Series Producer Nicholas Stein, has embedded his camera crews with agents and officers, gaining unparalleled access and capturing unforgettable moments, stories and images from the battle zone.
Now, at GovSec 2011, Stein will talk about his experiences and insights while making Border Wars. Hear how Stein and the production team captured their amazing footage, including tales of jumping from Blackhawk helicopters, busting into drug and human stash houses, riding ATVs at high speed through the fog along the fence, chasing drug smugglers in the mountains at night, crawling through drug tunnels and much, much more. Gain insights into the emotional and all-to-human side of illegal drug and human trafficking and discuss the impact on our “troops” in the field.
The current unrest in the Middle East has clear national security implications for the United States. Countries that are considered friendly could be ruled by extremists wishing to inflict harm on ourselves and our key allies. This panel will examine the prospects and implications for the United States of democratic success in the Tunisia, Egypt, Libya and other nations in the Middle East. The risk that Islamic extremist movements such as the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt could exploit the inevitable gap between popular expectations and the political and economic realities on the ground will also be discussed. The panel will also discuss the implications of social networking sites, texting and websites becoming became the command and control center for the revolutionary movements sweeping the Middle East.
Hear from the experts who lived and served in the Foreign Service and Intelligence Service in Egypt, Tunisia and other countries in the region.
