Free Airport Wi-Fi a Hotspot for Cybercriminals

So, you’re at the airport, not-so-patiently waiting for your flight that has been delayed…twice! You’ve walked the airport several times, just to get a change of scenery, and you’re really not too interested in spending your hard-earned money on the over-priced “stuff” at the airport stores. Bored and a tad-bit desperate, what do you do? Hmmmm, that “free” Wi-Fi zone looks pretty tempting! This is exactly what suave hackers want.

According to the FBI, one popular ploy is to offer a fake, free Wi-Fi zone. The unassuming hacker patiently waits for nearby devices to connect, at which point all sensitive information now belongs to our buddy, the hacker! But, the hacker isn’t selfish, no way. As he takes your personal information, he gives your device viruses, worms and malware. Ahhh, the hacker taketh, but giveths in return!

And, don’t forget about the new breeds of highly-sophisticated cybercriminals. While you use your device’s video camera to capture special moments, like your grandbaby’s first steps, these guys use them to monitor your movements as well as record your keystrokes to learn your secret passwords.

As I searched Google for a solution, it seems that establishing a VPN, virtual private network, helps to deter hackers by encrypting everything that you are doing on your device; however, never forget that hackers are intelligent, and I believe they can even find a way around VPNs.

Now, I don’t know about you, but all this is enough to convince me to simply read a book or magazine…a real book or magazine made with actual paper.

But, what do you think? Do you trust VPNs to keep you safe? Or, what do you think are some other solutions to ensure that free airport Wi-Fi is hack-free?
