Under Secretary for Science & Technology (Acting)

U.S. Department of Homeland Security

Through a collaborative research and development process, S&T is the core source of scientific and engineering expertise for DHS and the nation's entire Homeland Security Enterprise, including federal, state, local, tribal and territorial governments; nongovernmental and private-sector entities; and communities across the country.  S&T is charged with rapidly delivering innovative knowledge products and technology solutions to strengthen America's security and resiliency.

Briefing will highlight a number of initiatives representing S&T’s work in preparing for, detecting, responding to, and recovering from an incident.

Dr. Gerstein will address:

  • How innovation is changing the way DHS invests resources and thinks about homeland security  - through systems based analysis, S&T works to anticipate how threats will evolve and how we can counter them before it’s too late
  •  The importance of governance planning among the Federal, state, and local jurisdictions
  • Building robust capabilities and understanding the importance of emerging technologies
  • Moving forward:  education and partnerships across public and private sectors
